Apple unveils iPhone 3G

The biggest news of the week was the industry's worst kept secret. Nobody was the slightest bit surprised when Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple iPhone 3G.

Apple's competitors were definitely not surprised and Samsung and RIM both rushed out details of rival offerings to steal Apple's thunder. The new iPhone will start at the reduced price of $199 the world over, further adding interest from consumers. Industry analysts were also unsurprised, and at least a few were also unimpressed, with Apple's latest handset.

The device was damned with faint praise by one observer who described it as "no market changer", adding that the improvements do little more than help Apple keep up with the competition.

Info-Tech Research Group noted that that the addition of 3G, GPS and third-party applications simply allow Apple to match key competitors like RIM and other smartphone manufacturers.
But it is not just the technology that counts and we confidently predict that the iPhones will sell like hot cakes, especially as one of the biggest issues - price - has been addressed.
